# World Sickle Cell Awareness Day — June 19, 2025
Every year on June 19th, the world unites to raise awareness about sickle cell disease — one of the most common inherited blood disorders affecting millions of people worldwide, with a disproportionate impact on people of African descent.
## What is Sickle Cell Disease?
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. In a person with SCD, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a "sickle." The sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells.
